The Steel City FC women’s semi-pro soccer team kicks off its home schedule on Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Ellis School in Shadyside — as they take on Cleveland.
Steel City FC dropped their first game of the season at Detroit on Sunday, 1-0, in a hard fought match.
The team is made up on a number of former and current college female players from the Pittsburgh area.
Steel City FC is a part of the Women’s Premier Soccer League (WPSL), an independent highly competitive national league whose main focus is on the development of highly competitive premier women’s soccer teams.
They completed their inaugural season in 2015 with 6-2-1 record and were awarded a playoff spot — which they didn’t play in because they only had 24 hours to try to make the game in Detroit.
WPSL essentially is the second-division level in the U.S. Women’s soccer pyramid, below the professional National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL).
The WPSL was formed in 1998. We are sanctioned by the United States Adult Soccer Association (USASA), who is an affiliate of the United States Soccer Federation (USSF), the ruling body of soccer in the United States and FIFA the world’s ruling body for soccer.
As an organization, we began our efforts in 2014 as the world was gearing up for the women’s world cup. The 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup not only generated excitement for soccer, but brought much deserved attention to women’s soccer to both the national and local level.
**The Ellis School is located at 6425 Fifth Ave, Pittsburgh, PA 15206. Parking can be found by the field which is across the street from the entrance to Bakery Square.
