Freedom stunned Greensburg Central Catholic at Hampton to advance to its first ever WPIAL Semifinals (Photo Courtesy of Pittsburgh Tribune-Review)
What a night in WPIAL Boys soccer as all four classifications saw some exciting contests on Wednesday evening — including ome pretty big upsets.
I was fortunate to be on hand to see two of them — Freedom’s 1-o win over Greensburg Central Catholic in 1A, and Pine-Richland’s 3-1 win over Penn-Trafford in which sophomore Niko Marsh had the hat-trick for the Rams.
In the top tier classification, it was a clean sweep for all the Section 1 teams remaining– as top seed Seneca Valley, North Allegheny and Pine-Richland all won to join Upper St. Clair in the Class 4A semifinals.
Maybe, this will be the year that a non-South Hills team will win the top classification, which hasn’t happened since 2005 (Plum).
