Pulse of Pittsburgh Soccer: Steel City FC squads host Sunday doubleheader, while Hounds hit road again

The beat goes on for Pittsburgh’s soccer teams this weekend and into next week, as things hit an interesting stretch while the summer international soccer calendar is heating up with both Euro 2024 and Copa America 2024 in full swing.

The Riverhounds, who are continuing to struggle having been winless in their last seven matches, go back on the road for their third match in eight days, when they visit North Carolina FC, on Saturday at WakeMed Park in Cary, NC.

With little time for rest, the Hounds are coming off a tough, 1-0 loss to Louisville City FC (check out Colton Coreschi’s match recap and Ed Thompson’s Photo Gallery), before another sellout crowd at Highmark Stadium on Wednesday night.

With the exception of Wednesday’s match, the Hounds are spending the rest of June on the road, as they’ll follow-up this weekend’s match in Cary, with another trip out west, as they travel to Las Vegas next Saturday.

The Hounds will finally have an extended homestand — much like they did last season — as they will play four straight matches at Highmark Stadium in July.

In addition, Steel City FC’s men’s and women’s teams look to continue their high level of play this weekend as they host a doubleheader at Founders Field on Sunday.

Last week, both sides won their respective matches, as NPSL Great Lakes leaders traveled to Indiana, taking down Southern Indiana Guardians, 5-0, while the women rallied for a 2-1, come-from-behind victory fs Flower City Union at home.

If you haven’t seen the match highlights from last weekend’s Steel City wins, here they are:

The women kick things off at 3 p.m. with a return match vs Berlin FC, who they defeated earlier in the season, 6-0.

Steel City FC men, currently sitting comfortably in first place in the NPSL’s Great Lakes Conference standings (with 19 points — seven ahead of Akron City FC), will host the only club they haven’t beaten this season, Erie Commodores, on Sunday at 6 p.m. at Founders Field.  Steel City and Erie played to a 1-1 draw at Mercyhurst University on May 23.

Beadling SC (3w-3l-1d) are also coming down the wire as they wrap up WPSL conference play, as they will have the weekend off, but will play their regular season finale at home (Southpointe Fieldhouse) on Wednesday night (7 p.m. kickoff).
