WPIAL Girls Soccer Preview (8/31/2024)

Much like the boys, it’s a fairly light schedule on the second Saturday of the WPIAL Girls soccer season, with a handful of tournament matches, plus a number of non-conference matches.

The early kickoff match of note will see Avonworth, the three-time defending WPIAL champs, take on District 10 Erie Cathedral Prep. Avonworth has become a dominant WPIAL force in Girls Class 2A, once again winning its third straight district title last year, with now senior Fiona Mahan, who announced her commitment to University of Alabama earlier this season, as the team’s most established player.  The ‘Lopes stepped up in classification to start the season, battling Latrobe to a 0-0 draw at the Moe Rosensteel Memorial Kickoff last weekend.

The other match in the Avonworth Tournament features South Fayette taking on Bethel Park in what should be a good match between last year’s Class 3A WPIAL champs (South Fayette) and Bethel Park, a playoff team a year ago.  South Fayette began the season with a 4-2 loss to Class 4A Peters Township (4-2), but bounced back nicely with a non-section 4-0 win vs West Allegheny on Thursday.

Bethel Park began its season on Tuesday in section play, taking on and losing to West Allegheny, 1-0, but bounced back nicely to defeat Trinity, 7-0.

Over the course of the next two days, West Allegheny will be hosting a tournament of their own, as they will face Eden Christian on Saturday, then Keystone Oaks on Sunday.
