MATCH TO WATCH

Class 2A — Beaver Area at Avonworth

Ahead of this pivotal match between in Section 3, Beaver Area’s Nick Crivelli shared his thoughts about facing Avonworth.

“Avonworth caught a tough break losing Fiona (Mahan) to injury but they are still a very dangerous side. They are well coached and still loaded with talent,” Beaver Area’s Nick Crivelli said ahead of this important match between one of the remaining unbeaten teams and the reigning three-time WPIAL Class 2A champs.

“I expect nothing less than a closely played match like most of our meetings over the last several years. I’m expecting my side to be ready for a tough match. We have great senior leadership from our captains Sydney Chontos, Emerson Connelly and Lilia Battalini that that always prepares us for these big section matches.”

Other Match Notes: Avonworth have won two straight matches after suffering through a 4-match losing streak.  Beaver has surrendered only six goals all season.

Class 3A — Mars at Fox Chapel

Last year’s surprising Class 4A champs, Fox Chapel, have been a very strong force as they’ve stepped down to Class 3A this season, as Head Coach Carlo Prati’s talented roster has been keeping the momentum going, without a loss and the only draw coming against Class 4A Seneca Valley.  Once again, Mars remains a very, very strong program — a WPIAL finalist in six of the past seven years — with their lone setback coming this season against the Foxes in the first meeting in early September — a 1-0 result.  In a tight nil-nil affair in the second half, it was Fox Chapel who came up with the lone goal and got the right bounce when sophomore Emily McKee was in the right place at the right time, redirecting a rebound that landed to her feet following Cassie Classen’s shot from distance that banged off the bar.

Wednesday night’s match may once again come down to one bounce either way.
