MATCH DAY UPDATES

DEVELOPING STORY IN WPIAL SOCCER: Pittsburgh Soccer Now has learned that City Schools Allderdice and Obama Academy boys and girls soccer teams have been ruled ineligible for WPIAL section and postseason competition.

In addition to the scores we’re reporting tonight (see below), Pittsburgh Soccer Now has also learned the WPIAL officials have shared that games scheduled in the WPIAL featuring Pittsburgh City Schools Allderdice and Obama Academy are now no longer considered section matches, and will only count as friendlies.

WPIAL chief operating officer Vince Sortino shared this with the schools in an email on Thursday.

Sortino stated that the two schools were included in WPIAL section alignments at the City League’s request (as they have been in previous years), but due to a PIAA rule that was passed July 2023 — schools that are not from the same district can no longer request an exemption to compete in different districts as associate members.  For a number of years, primarily due to lack of schools within the City League that field soccer teams, the WPIAL included Pittsburgh City Schools soccer teams in section competition as an associate member.

The bottom line here is that WPIAL (District 7) officials and Pittsburgh City Schools Athletics (City League – District 8) didn’t bother to do their homework, misguiding the City League schools to continue to compete in the WPIAL without realizing that this rule was put in place before the 2023 season.

The PIAA Rule states: Teams from member schools are eligible to participate in PIAA District Championship tournaments and Contests only in the PIAA District in which they are a member.

The PIAA board approved the change in February 2023 and member schools voted 799-27 to enact the rule effective July 1, 2023.

In order to stay in compliance with this rule, the WPIAL had to inform Allderdice and Obama Academy’s soccer teams — nearly a year and three months later — that they are not eligible to compete in the WPIAL playoffs.

Sortino told the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review on Thursday that the the ineligibility was noticed only recently.

According to Pittsburgh Soccer Now‘s latest Playoff Projections, Allderdice’s boys soccer team (6-3-1, 4-2-1 in Class 3A, Section 3), who did not play on Thursday, are currently in 3rd place in the section they’ve been assigned, and would have been in line to secure a playoff berth.

Obama Academy’s boys team (4-8-0, 2-8-0 in section), also in Class 3A, but in Section 1, played on Thursday, losing 2-1 at Mars.

Allderdice’s girls team (4-7-0, 2-5-0 in section) competes in Class 4A, where they’ve been battling for a playoff spot in Section 3.  Obama Academy’s girls side has been competing in Class 3A and were not in contention for a playoff spot.

Pittsburgh Soccer Now will have more on this story to follow.

THURSDAY’s MATCHES TO WATCH

Class 4A — Canon-McMillan at Mt. Lebanon — The last time these two section rivals met the match needed to go to extra time, with the Devils coming out ahead, 3-2, with Ben Bowen converting a Jack O’Brian corner kick.

Both schools appear to be in good position to clinch playoff spots, however, the winner of this match could get a leg up when it comes to postseason seeding and take the series from their rivals.

Since that loss, Canon-Mac (7-3-1, 3-3-0 in section) have won four of its last six matches, and are currently ahead of Lebo in the standings.  Mt. Lebanon (7-6-0, 3-4-0 in section) completed its gauntlet of playing 1st and 2nd place Peters Township and Upper St Clair, back-to-back, with two straight losses, so the Devils will be looking for a bounce back win.

Class 3A – Latrobe at Penn-Trafford – Latrobe (9-3-0, 8-1-0 in section) can take another step toward winning the section with a second win of the season vs Penn-Trafford, as they seek their fourth straight win.  The first time around between these sides, it was tight match and some missed chances.

Latrobe found the game-winner in the first half on an opportunistic moment emanating from a long Warren Agostoni free kick from 40 yards, which breached P-T’s defending line, and found its way to Roman Agostoni, who took a touch, then delivered the winner at the far post. In his first season at Penn-Trafford, Ryan Hankey has led the Warriors to a 6-4-1 overall record (5-3-1 in section), as they come into this match having won four of its last five, with lone defeat coming to second place Franklin Regional.
