Late scoring surge from Pitt women’s soccer shakes away pesky Syracuse challenge, 3-0

Match Stats 

Pitt women’s soccer team dominated play for most of the match, but it took a late Deborah Abiodun brace along with Ellie Coffield’s strike from distance to shake a pesky Syracuse side, 3-0,

Pitt held a whopping 37-3 (17-1 on frame) shots advantage in the match.  Pitt goalkeeper Ellie Breech made one save, while the Orange’s keeper Shea Vanderbosch made 14 saves.

With the win, Pitt improves to 3-2-1 in ACC, where they currently sit in a four-way tie for 5th place with 10 points.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Despite being on the front foot throughout the contest, holding significant advantages in shots, corners and possession, Pitt had plenty of difficulty trying to get the ball past Syracuse’s goalkeeper Shea Vanderbosch.

Vanderbosch was stopping everything — to the tune of making 14 saves in the contest.

The Panthers continued to run up against a wall even more than halfway through the second half, as numerous chances on frame were turned away, including a 65th minute free kick attempt from Ellie Coffield that found its way into the upper right corner, but was denied.

The Panthers finally broke through in the 76th minute, when Schupansky’s corner kick attempt sailed just past the near post, where Abiobun rose above the pack to head it into the back of goal to give Pitt a 1-0 lead.

Five minutes later, Abiodun was in position again to double the lead coming from a Schupansky corner, but this time she initially fanned on her shot attempt, but recovered, then sent a well-placed low shot inside the right post.

In the 86th minute, Schupansky found Coffield on the edge of the box.

  From there, Coffield took one touch then drove her shot attempt into the corner — this time with a ton of pace that gave Vanderbosch no chance to make a save.

Next up for the Panthers, they’ll be heading to Florida for a Thursday-Sunday swing against Miami and Florida State.
