Match Day Preview

And here we go again — it’s another wet day in Western Pennsylvania.  We’ll see how things transpire through the afternoon and evening, but there’s a lot of good matches on tap, including:

  • Class 4A, Section 2 match-up between defending WPIAL champs, Peters Twp and Canon-McMillan The last time out, Peters nipped Canon-Mac, 3-2, in extra time.  In this week’s PSN’s High School Coaches Corner feature, Seneca Valley Head Coach Mark Perry shared praise for some of the toughest opponents his team has faced this season, pointing out that fellow veteran, WPIAL coaching legend, Pat Vereb has “an athletic team who puts a lot of pressure on you and is dangerous on set pieces.”  Though they’ve been tested a few times and drew against defending Class 3A champs, South Fayette and against Seneca Valley in non-section matches, Peters remains unbeaten (6-0-2 overall, 4-0-0 in section).  Traveling to take on one of their biggest rivals, beating Canon-Mac (4-3-1 overall, 2-2-1 in section and among best in Class 4A +28 goal differential) will be a tough task, especially as the Big Macs are in need of a statement win to secure their postseason standing/seeding.
  • Class 3A, Section 1 tussle between neighboring Hampton and Mars.  While Fox Chapel is in first place in this section, these two traditional rivals and top girls programs are in the mix and along with an improved Shaler and Gateway sides, made this one of the most competitive sections from top to bottom around.  The winner of this rematch (Hampton won the first time around), will get a leg up on second place and a favorable playoff seeding.

  • Class 2A, Section 3, much like the Class 3A match mentioned above, features two teams, Central Valley (5-2-1 overall, 3-1-1 in section) and Beaver Area (6-5-1 overall, 3-2-1 in section) who are in contention to secure postseason berths and secure a stronghold on second place in section with a win. The last time out, these two teams went the distance, playing to a 2-2 draw through regulation and extra time. This should be another tight contest.
  • Class 1A, Section 1, Freedom and Our Lady of the Sacred Heart, are both right there again, though Riverside has cruised into first place, these two teams always have very good battles.  The first time around this season, Freedom won, 4-2.  Results here will also be important toward potential playoff seeding between Paige Petroval and Colin Williams’ squads.
