While the bulk of the high school boys soccer teams in the region warmed up with non-conference action through the weekend and on Monday, Section 3 (1A) jumped straight into the fire as Trinity Christian and Winchester Thurston officially opened section play on Monday night in a match at F.N.B. Stadium.
Much like the girls’ side—where teams are adapting to the PIAA eliminating extra time in favor of tied 80-minute regulation matches—this lone section showdown ended deadlocked at 1-1. While there were eight draws in a full slate of girls matches on Monday, this was the only boys match that ended in a stalemate.
Beyond that Section 3 collision, Monday featured a lighter, non-conference slate of season openers across the district.
Below we take a look at Monday’s results before setting the table for a full Tuesday night schedule that sees section play kick into high gear across select sections in Class 3A, 2A, and 1A. In addition, we preview several heavyweight non-conference matches—including a 2024 Class 4A Final rematch between defending two-time champs Fox Chapel and Seneca Valley.

Tuesday’s Matchups to Watch
Tuesday night brings a packed, high-stakes schedule across the region. While several sections launch right into league play, a stellar slate of non-conference marquee games features top-tier programs clashing early.
Central Catholic at Upper St. Clair (8:00 PM – Non-Conference): A premier Class 4A benchmark match featuring new head coaches on both sides. Brian Fegley takes over at Upper St. Clair against his former squad, now led by Ben Fiore (previously with Kiski Area and Ambridge). Both teams opened at the JRK Memorial Classic—USC collected draws against Pine-Richland and Moon, while Central Catholic drew against a talented Kiski School side before earning a 1-0 win over Philadelphia’s Archbishop Ryan.
Fox Chapel at Seneca Valley (7:30 PM – Non-Conference): A marquee rematch of the 2024 Class 4A Final, which ended scoreless before Fox Chapel prevailed in a penalty shootout. Due to realignment, these perennial powers now meet as non-section foes. While key graduates departed on both sides, both rosters remain deep and talented. Seneca Valley, led by George Williams, enters off convincing wins over Archbishop Ryan (6-0) and The Kiski School (2-1). Erik Ingram’s Fox Chapel squad opened Friday with a 2-1 victory over crosstown rival Shady Side Academy.
Deer Lakes at Mars (7:00 PM – Non-Conference): A high-caliber cross-class clash between defending Class 2A District champion Deer Lakes and Class 3A contender Mars. Joe Haefner takes the helm for Mars this season, replacing longtime coach Chris Knauff. Expect high tempo and tactical execution throughout.
South Park at Charleroi (7:00 PM – Class 2A, Section 4): A major Section 4 spotlight as these storied programs meet as new section rivals. Both boast winning traditions, making this an immediate factor in the Section 4 race.
Greensburg Central Catholic at Springdale (7:00 PM – Class 1A, Section 3): Following the Trinity Christian/Winchester Thurston draw on Monday, this Section 3 clash carries added weight as both programs aim to take an early edge in a competitive section.
