USL League Two – Great Forest Division
FINAL: Steel City FC 1, FC Buffalo 0
A moment of brilliant opportunistic finishing, carried Steel City FC to a hard-fought, W League season opening 1-0 victory over FC Buffalo on Friday evening.
Veteran midfielder Marissa Salisbury proved to be the difference-maker, breaking a scoreless deadlock to find the back of the net and secure a vital three points on the road.
From the opening whistle, Steel City FC established a disciplined shape behind a youthful starting lineup.
Goalkeeper Ruby Morgan anchored the defense, marshalling a backline that consistently frustrated the Buffalo attack and limited high-quality chances throughout the match.
The breakthrough arrived via Salisbury, a former Yough High School and Slippery Rock standout who showed her veteran composure by executing clinically on the match’s defining sequence. Following the goal, Steel City shifted tactics to protect the lead, utilizing a deep bench of reserves to bleed the clock and lock down the clean sheet.
In her post-match interview, Salisbury broke down the sequence that led to the game-winner, highlighting the collective effort required to break down Buffalo’s defense on the road.
“I think we just worked really hard to create that opportunity,” Salisbury said.
“The ball came in from the flank, and there was a bit of a scramble in the box. I just managed to read the bounce, get my foot on it, and steer it past the keeper before the defense could close me down. It wasn’t the cleanest look, but on the road in a tough environment like this, you just have to be clinical when those moments arrive.”
Salisbury also praised the defensive resolve of the squad to maintain the shutout after taking the lead.
“Getting the goal is great, but the way the entire group fought to keep the clean sheet is what wins you games in this league,” Salisbury added.
“Buffalo pushed hard at the end, but everyone bought into their defensive roles, tracked back, and limited their space. Starting the road trip with a shutout and three points gives us a massive boost of confidence moving into the rest of the summer.”
