CHAMPIONSHIP ROAD: Unbeaten Steel City FC brings local chemistry to Flint for playoff clash with Northern Indiana

Twelve matches down, zero losses, and a defense that has practically locked the gates on the rest of the region.

Now, the real gauntlet begins.

This Friday at 4:00 PM ET, the undefeated Great Forest Division Champions, Steel City FC, will step onto the historic turf of Atwood Stadium in Flint, Michigan.

Their opponent in the USL League Two Round of 32? A clinical and unfamiliar foe in Northern Indiana FC.

If the club wants to extend its historic summer, keep its hopes of automatic U.S. Open Cup qualification alive, and make a deep national tournament run, they must survive a brutal one-and-done double-header weekend.

Scouting the Opponent: Who is Northern Indiana FC?

Unlike last summer’s trip to Michigan, which featured a matchup against host giants Flint City, Steel City opens this postseason campaign with a true wildcard.

Northern Indiana FC enters the tournament as the runners-up of the highly competitive Valley Division. While they might not carry the historic national name recognition of some of the Central Conference’s older mainstays, they are a structurally sound, incredibly disciplined side.Based in South Bend, Northern Indiana FC qualified for the USL League Two Central Conference Playoffs by securing second place in the Valley Division with an 8W-4L-0D mark.  After a rough start, the squad surged into the postseason by winning their final five matches.

• While they are based in South Bend, the NI roster does not have any Notre Dame players on its roster but have local talents like Tristan Alfaro, Diego Arrieta, and Benjamin Chavarria  Chavarria is an attacking threat who plays collegiately at Loyola (IL) and Alfaro and Arrieta are standouts with Bethel (IN) — a NAIA program.  

• The Backline Core: Northern Indiana’s success is built from the back forward. They play an organized, compact shape that aims to suffocate passing lanes in the midfield and hit teams on highly structured counter-attacks.

• The Tactical Battle: Steel City’s patience on the ball will be tested. This match will likely be a chess match of tempos. If Steel City can use their signature possession style to stretch Northern Indiana out wide, winger Jaxon Ervin and the attacking front line will find the space they need. If they get sloppy in transition, Northern Indiana has the clinical edge to punish them.

If Steel City manages to defeat Northern Indiana on Friday afternoon, they won’t have long to celebrate.

They will immediately advance to the Central Conference Final on Sunday, July 19 at 6:00 PM ET, where they will square off against the winner of Friday night’s marquee match between host powerhouse Flint City Bucks and FC Buffalo.

Hometown Roots & The Standard

Appearing on this week’s Sounding Off on Soccer podcast, team captain Ryan Kopay (Moon / FDU) and winger Jaxon Ervin (West Allegheny / Duquesne) reflected on a soccer journey that stretches back to their childhood days playing together with youth powerhouse Beadling SC.

“We’ve known how each other plays since we were kids,” Ervin, who’s thrived on the wing as one of Steel City FC’s leading goal scorers during this campaign, said.

“To come back after our college seasons, look across the locker room, and see guys you’ve competed with and against since you were ten years old—it creates an instant trust on the pitch.”

That relentless drive occasionally leads to high-intensity moments on the training pitch, but Kopay emphasizes it’s exactly what fuels their unbeaten mentality.

“Jackson wants to win as bad as anyone ever,” Kopay laughed.

“But when we’re on the field, we relate to each other extremely well. Keeping an arrow pointed up in the loss column and prioritizing clean sheets is what championship teams do.”

An Iron Defending Mentality

The squad’s defensive metrics this summer are nothing short of absurd: 9 clean sheets and only three goals conceded over 12 matches. It’s a defensive standard anchored by standout goalkeeper Josh Lane (Robert Morris), who has excelled at holding his backline to an elite standard.

“We take pride in suffering together,” Lane shared recently.

“When you have guys willing to put their bodies on the line in the 80th minute of a tight match, it makes my job easier. We aren’t just trying to win games; we are trying to keep zeros on the scoreboard.”

Defender Ashwin Menon echoed that sentiment, pointing to the collective maturity of the group:

“Our defensive shape is our identity. Every single guy, from the front line pressing to the back four, is completely bought into our defensive structure. We know that if we don’t concede, we can’t lose. That’s the playoff mentality we are taking to Michigan.”

The Domino Effect

For Head Coach Dan Brower, the key to maintaining this relentless culture lies in the shared belief throughout the entire organization—from the veteran leaders to the nine academy prospects who earned first-team minutes in the regular-season finale.

“Our ambitious Project has been a huge success because these players play with each other, for one another, and for this Club,” Brower noted.

“It’s a domino effect. When one guy buys in, he pushes the next guy, and suddenly you have an entire roster operating with one single goal in mind.”
