The High School Soccer season has officially become more of a sprint this week as the second half of the WPIAL section campaign is now underway.

While numerous section matches were on the slate, but before everyone dives back into section competition, there was a good number of WPIAL schools — based on some schedule quirks — took the pitch for non-section matches on Monday.

On Sunday, Pittsburgh Soccer Now made its first playoff seeding projections — and many teams used Monday inter-classification and top-tier matchups to give the WPIAL soccer committee more to evaluate for October’s bracket seeding:

4A Top-Tier Battle Ends Level (Fox Chapel 1, Seneca Valley 1)

Two of Class 4A’s elite contenders—Fox Chapel (Section 1 leader) and Seneca Valley (Section 3 runner-up)—battled to a tight 1-1 draw with goals coming from Leah D’Amico (SV) and Gemma Levy (FC). With this result, both programs reinforce their credentials for top-four seeding and first-round byes in the 12-team 4A field. Because the match ended level under the PIAA’s no-overtime rule, neither team takes a hit on their loss column, giving both a strong argument for top-four placement alongside Peters Township and North Allegheny.

1A Power Statement (Sewickley Academy 6, Winchester Thurston 2)

In an inter-section showdown between Class 1A heavyweights, Sewickley Academy remained unbeaten and made a strong case for the top overall seed come postseason by handily topping Section 3 leaders Winchester Thurston 6-2. Sewickley Academy moves up as a candidate for the #1 overall seed in Class 1A. The convincing road win for Sewickely was sparked byAvianna Gibbs’ four goals while Olivia Stefanik added a brace as Sewickley Academy (averaging nearly 8 goals per game) remains unbeaten in all competition.

3A vs 2A Measuring Sticks (Mars 1, Quaker Valley 0 & Belle Vernon 2, Bentworth 1)

Two non-conference clashes pitted 3A contenders against 2A and 1A leaders:

• Mars 1, Quaker Valley 0: Class 3A Mars edged Class 2A contender Quaker Valley as Miley Gratton’s goal was the difference in the match, with Jade Breese providing the assist. .

• Belle Vernon 2, Bentworth 1: 3A Section 3 leader Belle Vernon handed Class 1A leader Bentworth a tight non-conference loss. Laila Kruppa and Raegan Sobczak found the back of the net for Belle Vernon (6-1-3) in a nonsection victory over Bentworth (8-1). For Bentworth, it was Bella Moyer, who gave the 1A squad the lead at the half. “Great non-section game for us,” Bentworth’s Tyler Hamstra shared with Pittsburgh Soccer Now. “Belle Vernon is an older team, very big, strong and physical . Can definitely seee why they are leading their 3A section. Great squad.”

3A vs 2A Draw (South Fayette 1, Central Valley 1)

Class 3A top-ranked South Fayette leveled out at 1-1 against Class 2A Section 3 leader Central Valley, with Chloe Haney getting the goal for Central Valley while Avery Shubert had the goal for Central Valley.  It was a good strength-of-schedule resume boost for Central Valley by holding one of 3A’s premier programs to a draw, boosting their case though they’re mired in a battle within section against Avonworth and Quaker Valley. Remarkably, it was the defending Class 3A PIAA champ’s fifth draw this season (5-1-5 overall)>
