U.S. Open Cup Reveals Schedule/Format for 2016

The Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup revealed its schedule and format for 2016 earlier today
The Pittsburgh Riverhounds will start their Cup run this year in the second round which will have games scheduled on Wednesday, May 18, against a first round winner.  Most likely, that game will a home game for the Riverhounds — at Highmark Stadium.
There will be no possibility of a Fort Pitt Regiment (NPSL) and Riverhounds all-Pittsburgh match-up this year, as the FPR didn’t earn one of the 15 NPSL places in the tournament.  Last year, the Regiment lost to the West Virginia Chaos in the first round.   The Chaos went on to lose to the Riverhounds at Highmark Stadium a week later.
While there may not be possibility of a Fort Pitt-Riverhounds match, a Pittsburgh-Cleveland, Steel-Belt rivalry match could take place.  NPSL’s AFC Cleveland will be in the Open Cup tournament — playing a first-round game.   We’ll have to watch that closely when the matches are announced later.
In 2015, the Riverhounds won two Open Cup matches last year (West Virginia Chaos NPSL, 3-0 and Tampa Bay Rowdies, NASL, 1-0) at Highmark Stadium, and lost to D.C. United, MLS, 3-1 in OT in the Fourth Round.
The Riverhounds have gone 5-1 in their last six U.S. Open Cup games at Highmark Stadium dating back to 2013.
