Freshman goal frenzy: Burrell beats Deer Lakes, 4-2 to stay in section lead

In a matchup of undefeated section rivals, Burrell got a leg up on Deer Lakes in Class 2A, Section 2 match-up, winning 4-2 with a pair of freshman forwards leading the way.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Both Deer Lakes and Burrell were feeling each other out as Burrell would slowly start to tilt the field. Early on freshman forward Leah Brockett sent a left footed shot just wide of the goal to create the first real chance of the game.

Burrell who plays very tactically sound, would start to create more space and opportunities. Freshman forward Tessa Mathabel slotted a diagonal ball to Brockett as she would finish for the first goal of the game.

The tandem would get together quickly again but would be denied this time by Deer Lakes senior goal keeper Jaiden Cutright who made a sliding tackle to clear the ball from danger.

Brockett would be back in on goal again and would find the net for her second goal of the game and make it a 2-0 lead for Burrell.

Deer Lakes’ goal keeper Cutright would be tested again on a corner kick deflecting the ball and then getting into position to make a point blank save at the 8-minute mark of the first half.

Mathabel would get her first goal of the match beating the keeper to her right and slotting the ball into the goal for a 3-0 lead for Burrell.

Deer Lakes finally gets loose in the Burrell half of the field and Junior Madeline Boulos takes a shot from outside the numbers and over the Burrell keepers outstretched hands to make it 3-1 in favor of Burrell just under a minute in the half.

Burrell’s senior captain Jordyn Kowalkowski made a run late trying to beat the clock and cross the ball to Mathabel and she would one time it to make it 4-1 Burrell with 7.6 seconds left in the first half.

The second half would still be in Burrell’s favor as Leah Brockett was creating chances for the Lady Bucs, but the Lancers would be the first to find the goal in the second half on a long shot by senior Abigail Boulos to cut the lead in half and make it 4-2 in favor of Burrell.

Cutright would be called on to make another big save on Mathabel to keep it 4-2.

Deer Lakes would get a call in the box for a penalty kick at the 16:35 mark but Ashley McAdams attempt would find the crossbar and be cleared by Burrell.

Burrell would soon get an attempt in on goal and Jaiden Cutright would take a shot to the face to make the save but go down. She would walk off under her power. She would return three minutes later to take her spot back in goal.

A free kick would be awarded to Burrell’s Jordy Kowalkowski on the edge of the 18. With a chance to extend their lead and maybe put the game away Kowalkowski would hit the crossbar and see the ball cleared away from danger.

With just under eight minutes to play Mathabel would work her way through a foul and get the advantage call and put fellow freshman Brockett in. Brockett would be pulled down inside the box leading a PK this time for Burrell. Brockett’s hat trick chance would find the post and keep the game at 4-2.

With the win, Burrell (4-0) takes a very important section win home with two games left against section new comer and the reigning Class 1A WPIAL champs, Shady Side Academy. Deer Lakes drops to 2-2 in section and 3-2 overall.
