WPIAL Soccer Daily Preview (8/29/2024)

The high school soccer schedule continues Thursday with boys teams back in action in full, with section play continuing for Class 2A and Class 3A, while there’s a lot of good non-section matches on tap.

Also, on this week’s Kids on the Pitch Podcast, I was joined by Pittsburgh Soccer Now‘s Matt Popchock to break down the first week of high school soccer, as we shared our thoughts on teams we covered during the JRK Memorial Classic.  And, we were also joined by Rafal Kolankowski, Boys Head Coach at Plum High School.

A couple matches we’ll be keeping close tabs on include:

  • Boys Class 4A – Non-Section clash between Plum vs Peters Township – In their first year back in Class 4A, Kolankowski has made a point to schedule some tough non-section matches to start the season, and boy did he do that.  The Mustangs started the season off with a 4-1 win vs Shaler. It doesn’t get any more challenging than the next three matches, as they took on Upper St Clair over the weekend in their tournament, then faced North Allegheny on Tuesday, and now, on Thursday, they’ll host Peters Township.  Plum (1-0-2) went the distance with both USC and NA. Peters, led by longtime head coach Bobby Dyer, are off to a strong start, with wins vs 3A Bethel Park (6-0) and defending 4A Champs Norwin (2-0).

“We play two different styles, but it should be a good match-up, and test for us,” Kolankowski said.

  • Boys Class 1A – Non-Section meeting pitting Winchester Thurston vs Greensburg Central Catholic should be a good early season test for two high school programs that have been WPIAL winners in the past half decade.  We caught up with WT’s Head Coach Adam Brownold at JRK Memorial Classic last weekend, where the Bears took on Class 3A Central Valley (losing 3-2 on a late goal) and Moon (dropping 3-1). Brownold shared his thoughts with PSN on the importance of playing tough non-section matches early in the season and said when it comes to playing Class 1A teams: “We’ll have to jump in and see what happens.”  The Centurions opened the season with a hard fought, 1-1 draw against another perennial 1A contender, Eden Christian, on Tuesday.
