Match Day Notes

  • What are best match-ups by section on Thursday?
    • Class 4A — North Allegheny at North Hills — that’s right, North Hills, led by a strong senior class, picked up back-to-back head turning wins vs Pine-Richland and Seneca Valley last week to climb up in the standings in always tough Section 2.  Now, the Indians look to avenge an earlier 4-0 loss to North Allegheny as the Tigers, who are tied for first place with Fox Chapel, will make their way ‘down’ Perrysville Ave — to Martorelli Stadium.
    • Class 3A — Thomas Jefferson at Bethel Park — In Section 2, it’s going to be a dogfight to the finish, but the winner here could get a leg up in the race for first place.  BP’s only loss in section this season came to TJ, 2-0, in late August. Bethel Park will look to keep the momentum going as they’ve now surged to the top of the section race.

    • Class 2A — Avonworth at Quaker Valley — This is another extremely competitive section title race with at least three teams capable of making it to Highmark Stadium is Class 2A, as two of those squads will do battle in a rematch of a surprising Avonworth 3-0 result in beating Quaker Valley in late August, as the ‘Lopes Abdul Basit stunned the Quakers with a hat trick.   Quaker Valley (8-3-0 overall, 8-1-0 in section) has started slow in recent years, and guess what?  The Quakers are in very good form of late — winning seven straight including a 2-1 extra time victory last week against the third wheel of this section race, Central Valley.  Avonworth’s (7-2-1 overall, 7-1-0 in section) only loss in section competition came in a 2-1 defeat to Central Valley.
    • Class 1A — Bentworth at Greensburg Central Catholic — The defending WPIAL 1A boys champions, Bentworth (10-0-0 overall, 4-0-0 in section), have been rolling through all competition this season, including an impressive 6-0 defeat of GCC in their first match as they’re currently on a dominating run of seven matches posting a scoreless streak and 55 goals (55-0).  The Centurions (3-1-0 in section) are Bentworth’s closest foe in section, and this time around, the match will be on GCC’s home turf, which if anything could make things interesting.

  • Who are the remaining unbeatens in Boys WPIAL Soccer?
    • Class 4A
      • Plum (9-0-2 overall, 5-0-0 in section)
      • Peters Township (9-1-1 overall, 5-0-0 in section) is unbeaten in section play
    • Class 3A
      • Moon (10-0-0 overall, 5-0-0 in section)
    • Class 2A
      • Charleroi (10-0-0 overall, 9-0-0 in section
      • South Park (9-1-1 overall, 7-0-1 in section
      • Elizabeth Forward (7-2-1 overall, 7-0-1 in section)
    • Class 1A
      • Bentworth (9-0-0 overall, 4-0-0 in section)
      • Winchester Thurston (5-2-1 overall, 4-0-1 in section)
  • Highest scoring team across all classifications:  Charleroi (2A) with 68 goals
  • Highest scoring teams by remaining classifications:
    • Norwin (4A) — 41
    • Moon (3A) — 55
    • Bentworth (1A) — 60
  • Least number of goals allowed across all classifications:  Hampton (3A) – 1
    • Crazy stat lines for Hampton, last year’s runner-up in Class 3A. The Talbots have a 5-1-3 overall record, scoring 19 goals this season to post a +18 goal differential, but in section play, they currently sit below the playoff line (3-1-3).  The Talbots’ lone loss (of course by a 1-0 margin) came to Indiana, while they’ve played three 0-0 draws.
  • Least number of goals allowed by remaining classifications:
    • Peters Township (4A) – 5
    • Also in 3A — Mars and Thomas Jefferson have each surrendered 4 goals and front-running Moon has only conceded 5 goals
    • South Park (2A) — 9
    • Bentworth (1A) — 3
