Although they clinched their first ever regular season ACC Championship in program history this past weekend, a road loss to Syracuse set Pitt Men’s Soccer sliding in this week’s polls.
Both the United Soccer Coaches Poll and the Top Drawer Soccer poll ranked the Panthers at No. 3 last week.
After falling 2-0 to Syracuse, their most lopsided loss of the season, however, they check in at No. 9 and No. 6, respectively. In a twist, this marks the first time this season that Top Drawer has rated Pitt higher than the coaches poll has.
Underlying metrics like the NCAA’s RPI still heavily favor the 12-4 (6-2 ACC) Panthers, assessing them as the best team in the nation. As such, the D1 Committee’s Top 16, which is crucial for playoff seeding once the tournament begins, has them at No. 2.
Other area schools in the rankings include West Virginia (No. 10/No.16) and Penn State Women’s Soccer (No. 22/No. 11).
Pitt Men’s Soccer will next take the field at home at 8pm on Sunday, November 10, facing the winner of Wednesday’s matchup between No. 8 NC State and No. 9 Virginia in the quarterfinal round of the ACC Tournament.
