Road To Highmark: WPIAL tweaks Championship match schedule

The early part of ‘Championship Week’ schedules for the WPIAL Boys and Girls Soccer tournaments in the eight classifications have been in flux.

Adding a major wrinkle to the WPIAL schedule, with the Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC now hosting a home playoff match on Saturday night, the WPIAL Finals at Highmark Stadium will see a shift from the originally planned schedule.

The dates for the finals were previously set to be from Thursday, October 30 through Saturday, November 1, with the traditional schedule centering around two matches on Thursday and Friday, then a quadruple-header on Saturday.

However, the WPIAL has switch to a four-day format, with two matches each day beginning on Wednesday and ending on Saturday.

As of Tuesday morning, we can confirm Wednesday night’s matches will feature Class 2A Boys Final between Deer Lakes and Beaver Area (6 p.m.) then Class 3A Girls Final between Fox Chapel and South Fayette.

All PIAA District level finals must be played before Sunday, November 2, as that’s the day when the PIAA (State) playoff brackets are finalized as the State playoffs are scheduled to begin on Tuesday, November 4.

There are a lot of factors to consider what the impact of the shift in the schedule.  The biggest drawback will likely result in some schools having to play in a Championship match with one day of rest in between, which could have some bearing on the quality of play. Additionally, with matches being played in the middle of the week, this may affect attendance and support for the respective teams.
