Saturday’s Quarterfinal Round Match Capsules

#8 Burrell (10-6-2) at #1 South Park (18-0-0)

This will be a rematch of last year’s semifinal clash, which saw Burrell upset South Park to get to the school’s first-ever WPIAL finals appearance.

The schools now meet with spot in the Final Four on the line.

This should be a very good match-up, as one WPIAL Girls 2A coach pointed out earlier this season in Coaches Corner singling out both South Park and Burrell: “They both play a great style of soccer and have highly skilled players all over the field. In addition, they can bring players off the bench, and they maintain a high level of play.”

For South Park, who have not lost this season, Junior Arianna Beck scores goals in bunches, while keeper Gianna Cardillo has now reached 15 clean sheets on the season after Tuesday’s 3-0-win vs Yough. The Eagles are a very difficult team to break down — having allowed just two goals all season.

One coach pointed out in PSN’s Coaches Corner about South Park: “They are consistently strong, very technically and tactically sound. Their on and off the ball movement is precise and they are hard to mark. A very fluid team and each player contribute equally.”

In another edition of PSN’s Coaches Corner, Burrell’s Frank Nesko drew praise from other coaches as someone who has his teams ready to play and the Bucs are a tough group to beat.

In its first-round win (1-0 vs a defensively sound Belle Vernon squad), Burrell junior Makiah Buchak had the timely goal that was the difference late in the first half.  Maybe even more impressive, the Bucs held the Leopards to just two shots, none in the second half, in walking away with a 1-0 victory.

Shutting down South Park, now that will take a very special effort, but the Bucs have done it before.

#6 Central Valley (12-3-1) at #3 Quaker Valley (13-2-1)

Maybe the third time will be the charm for Central Valley in this upcoming matchup with section rival Quaker Valley.

After an early season loss, Central Valley was the only Class 2A team this season (after an early season loss to 4A Pine-Richland) that Quaker Valley didn’t beat.

The defending WPIAL champs — Quaker Valley — didn’t have any trouble in the opening round — with an easy 9-0-win vs Southmoreland.  In the one-sided affair, Lily Baker scored five goals for the Quakers.

Leading the way for the Quakers, is Annabel Miko this season, with the junior earning her 50th goal early in the season (on Sept. 3 against Ambridge) and not slowing down since. Miko, a Delaware commit, finished the regular season with 17 goals.

Central Valley comes into this match with its section rivals with a lot of confidence after a comfortable 7-0 win over Keystone Oaks, with a trio of braces from Reagan Patton, Gia Guandolo, and Nina Guandolo.

#7 North Catholic (12-5-0) at #2 Freeport (15-1-0)

It will be another clash of section rivals — as Freeport will have the tall task of beating the same team three times this season.  The Jackets already beat North Catholic by scores of 4-0 and 2-0.

The No. 2 seed in this tournament, Freeport showed its firepower adding to its plus-64 goal differential in the regular season by beating Ringgold, 11-0, on Tuesday.

The Jackets were led by a hat trick from Camryn Woods, plus braces from Nia DiSanti and Brinley Sullivan.

Freeport knows full well what they’re up against.  North Catholic has one of the top players in this classification and around the WPIAL in Western Michigan commit, Simone Sharpless, who rose to the occasion on Tuesday, with a dynamite long-distance strike, then provided the service for Reagan Young’s game-winner that proved to be the difference in pushing North Catholic into the quarterfinals.

Head Coach DJ Sharpless told PSN in Coaches Corner earlier this season that his team has been working hard and continues to improve.

With a third match on tap against Freeport, they’ll get a chance to take a huge step forward.

#12 Shady Side Academy (7-9-0) at #4 Mount Pleasant (13-4-1)

The third section rematch features Shady Side Academy group that proved they have the mettle to take down No. 5 Deer Lakes, with an impressive 1-0 shutout.  Virginia Powers had the match’s lone goal.

Head Coach Mary Lynch has led SSA teams to WPIAL finals before and proved on Tuesday that they will not be a team that will be easy to defeat, even though they had a losing record during the regular season, including two losses to Bill Garland’s Mount Pleasant side.

Mount Pleasant were unbeaten in section play (10-0-0) and played a very difficult schedule out of section — which has them battle-tested and ready for the postseason. Led by Robert Morris commit, Morgan Gesinski, the Vikings shook off a challnege from Avonworth.  Addy Cole also scored in the first half for the Vikings.
