MATCH REPORT: Riverhounds secure gritty road point in scoreless grind at Hartford

If you tuned into Saturday night’s playoff rematch expecting a high-flying, end-to-end shootout, you clearly haven’t been paying attention to the Eastern Conference hierarchy this season.

In a match defined by defensive suffocations and elite goaltending, the Pittsburgh Riverhounds and Hartford Athletic did exactly what they do best: they completely locked each other down. The Hounds couldn’t quite find the attacking puzzle pieces to solve a stingy, reinvented Hartford side that has quickly blossomed into one of the league’s elite defensive juggernauts under Brendan Burke, resulting in a grueling, physical 0-0 draw at a packed Trinity Health Stadium.

“I think it probably is a fair result, certainly one we’ll take on the road,” Rob Vincent, Riverhounds Head Coach said.

“In the first half, we dealt with a lot of wind and the sun right in our eyes, so I think to stand strong and limit them to a few opportunities was very good, and we had a few chances of our own, we hit the cross bar once. I was hoping second half we’d kick on and kind of use the wind to our favor, but I think we started a little slow and let them control the first 20, 25 minutes. By the end, we started to get the ball back on our side. It was not our best performance of the season, but it was good enough to earn a point.”

The single road point keeps both squads firmly entrenched in a razor-thin, chaotic bottleneck at the top of the USL Championship standings, where teams are practically trading paint while jockeying for position in the top three or four slots. For the Hounds (now 6-4-2, 20 points), it was an exercise in defensive resilience and missed late opportunities, marking the 15th scoreless draw across the USL Championship this season—and a result that leaves both sides waiting for a true breakthrough in the Eastern title race.

⚽ How It Happened

First Half Blanks

The opening 45 minutes started with some methodical back-and-forth, neither team really getting a clear look on net. There was a raucous, sellout crowd in the stands at Trinity Health Stadium to welcome Hartford head coach Brenden Burke back for his first game since signing a new three-year contract extension.

Hartford’s defense has been exemplary all season, anchored by goalkeeper Antony Siaha who leads the USL Championship with six clean sheets. However, they ran into some serious trouble in the 20th minute when a dangerous ball pushed into the box by the Hounds nearly forced an own goal from the Connecticut side.

The first half wore on with few clear offensive chances. The Hounds did well to control the midfield and manage possession. In the 38th minute, Pittsburgh made another strong push into the box, but the boys in green closed in quickly to break up the play.

Pittsburgh was also facing off against a familiar foe: Hartford forward Augi Williams, who was a crucial member of the Hounds’ championship team last season. While Williams found some space and looked to move the ball quickly on the counter, the Hounds’ backline did an exceptional job of neutralizing his service and keeping him off the scoresheet. Hartford utilized excellent long diagonal passing to stretch the field but failed to register a single shot on target. Both teams went into the locker room at halftime tied with just three total shots apiece.

Second Half Drama

The tension amplified immediately after the break. Hounds defender Perrin Barnes made a brilliant, high-IQ play on an early Hartford corner kick, physically wresting the ball away from an attacker before launching a clearance out of danger.

Eliot Goldthorp was dealt a yellow card in the 50th minute, marking the first caution of the match for either side. Just two minutes later, Nico Campuzano came up with his first massive moment of the night. In the 52nd minute, the Hounds’ keeper executed an incredible diving save to his right, blocking a heavy, on-target blast from Hartford with his right hand to keep the game level.

Pittsburgh began to spend more time on the front foot, though possession remained an even 50/50 split. Campuzano was called into action again later in the half, holding the line with exceptional handling as Hartford’s press grew increasingly aggressive.

Hounds head coach Rob Vincent looked to spark the offense by making his first substitution in the 69th minute, subbing on Trevor Amann. The move injected immediate life into Pittsburgh’s ball movement. Moments later, Charles Ahl unleashed a phenomenal, curling strike, but Siaha answered with an incredible, leaping fingertip save to deny the opening goal.

In a bizarre sequence, Hartford attempted to sub out Williams for Sadat Anaku, but Anaku did not immediately enter the pitch, forcing Hartford to play with just 10 men for a brief period before he finally joined the action.

Despite late tactical tweaks from both benches, neither side could find the final bit of offensive ingenuity to break the deadlock. Barnes nearly turned provider in the 87th minute with a dangerous cross into the area, but the Hartford defense managed to block it away. Hartford immediately countered with a stinging shot from the left side of the box, forcing Campuzano into a secure, two-handed save.

The final sequence of the night brought maximum drama. The Hounds executed a quick buildup and whipped a beautiful, targeted cross inside the box to Albert Dikwa. The star striker just missed the connection on a heavy header, falling to the pitch in frustration as the final whistle blew, knowing a slightly better angle would have locked up all three points on the road.

The match goes into the books as the 15th scoreless draw of the USL Championship season. It marks the Hounds’ fourth clean sheet of the year, as well as the fourth time they have been held scoreless.

🗣️ From the Pitch

Rob Vincent on Eliot Goldthorp’s impact and flashpoint moments:
“He’s always making an impact, and he’s always exciting when he gets on the ball. He was kind of the catalyst for our chances in the first half, and he could have won a penalty being taken down in the box. We took him off when we did, we didn’t want to, but he was on a yellow card, and having just committed the foul in front of the Hartford bench, he was probably on his last warning. I know for him, he’s frustrated just because he’s not getting goals and assists right now, but he’s working hard and making things happen when he’s out there.”
Rob Vincent on the team’s streak without conceding reaching 426 minutes (all comps):
I think the guys are taking a lot of pride in it, which is really pleasing to see. They want to defend in the run of play and also set pieces. It means a lot to those guys, especially Owen, Lasse, Victor and Perrin (the back four), and you can see that stringing those clean sheets together gives us confidence moving forward. … Any time you get a clean sheet, you know you’re guaranteed a point, and it gives us a great chance to get three.”
