For the first time since 2002, the U.S. Men’s National Team has advanced past the World Cup knockout rounds, securing a historic victory that sent shockwaves of joy through soccer fans across the country.
Here in Pittsburgh, local supporters didn’t let a wave of hot, sticky weather keep them from coming together to celebrate the monumental moment.
Fans turned out in droves at F.N.B. Stadium on the South Shore, transforming the home of the Riverhounds into a roaring, high-energy Watch Party. From the opening whistle to the final chaotic seconds, the atmosphere along the Monongahela was electric as a sea of red, white, and blue braved the elements to cheer on the Yanks.
Pittsburgh Soccer Now photographer Ed Thompson and I were on the ground at Station Square to capture all the sweat, tension, and unbridled celebration. I talked to several fans and attendees, whose names will be included below with last names omitted for privacy purposes.
“I’m a soccer fan,” watch party attendee Sarah said. “I love watching whatever team is playing.”
Sarah’s friend Bailey agreed. “It’s our country’s (250th anniversary),” she said. “For USA to win the World Cup would be absolutely insane.”
Many fans now feel that growing sense of belief in the 2026 USMNT. After this win against Bosnia, that is for good reason; through four games, USA is 3-1 with a 10-4 goal differential. Star forward Christian Pulisic has yet to score in the tournament, but in a way, he hasn’t had to. The depth and quality of Mauricio Pochettino’s squad has been on strong display, with eight different goal scorers across four contests.
“It’s pretty amazing (to see the success),” Jeremy, another fan, said. “Actually watching the United States having a real chance at actually clinching their group and then making a decent run, has been pretty exciting.”
A new transplant to Pittsburgh, Jeremy has enjoyed immersing himself in the city’s soccer culture. “Even outside of F.N.B., going to all the watch parties that have been around the city, you get a real sense of support, for not only the United States and their team but for the World Cup in general.”
Like many across the country, some Pittsburgh residents have been engaging with the excitement and energy of the tournament.
“I have intense World Cup fever this summer,” JP, an area resident, said. “I really wanted to come and support the U.S. team against Bosnia…I wanted to share this moment with community, with other people, because I feel that’s what is so beautiful about the World Cup, is that it brings people together.”
