WPIAL / PIAA Boys Daily Report and Weekend Preview (Sept 3-5): Section battles heat up as teams settle into school routines

As Western Pennsylvania high schoolers settle into the full rhythm of back-to-school schedules and classroom routines, the high school soccer calendar hits another gear heading into the Labor Day weekend.

Teams across the region are shaking off early-season rust, building chemistry, and adjusting to full weeks of training and match play.

It’s also an exciting time to track local WPIAL products making noise on the collegiate pitch.

Former Charleroi standout Eben McIntyre is off to a scorching start in his second season at Memphis after transferring from Pitt, continuing to showcase the high-level scoring instincts that made him a household name in Western PA. Meanwhile, the University of Pittsburgh men’s soccer program continues to lean on local talent—Kiski Area product Anders Bordoy made headlines on Friday night, delivering a massive game-winning goal to propel the Panthers past rival Penn State and keep Pitt’s dominant regional run alive.

It is a busy Thursday on the pitch across Western Pennsylvania as WPIAL boys soccer section play continues for select Class 3A, 2A, and 1A programs, alongside a deep slate of marquee non-section and cross-classification clashes.

With early-season points on the line, several key section matchups highlight tonight’s action, including Franklin Regional at Kiski Area and Greensburg Salem at Indiana in Section 1-3A, a fast-emerging rivalry in Section 1-2A with Knoch visiting Deer Lakes, and a key early test in Section 3-2A as Shady Side Academy travels to South Allegheny.

Meanwhile, non-section play features heavyweight showdowns across the higher classes—highlighted by Norwin visiting North Allegheny, Peters Township making the trip to Fox Chapel, Mt. Lebanon clashing with Moon, and Seneca Valley squaring off with Canon-McMillan.

John Krysinsky

John Krysinsky has covered soccer and other sports for many years for various publications and media outlets. He is also author of 'Miracle on the Mon' -- a book about the Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC, which chronicles the club, particularly the early years of Highmark Stadium with the narrative leading up to and centered around a remarkable match that helped provide a spark for the franchise. John has covered sports for Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, DK Pittsburgh Sports, Pittsburgh Sports Report, has served as color commentator on Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC broadcasts, and worked with OPTA Stats and broadcast teams for US Open Cup and International Champions Cup matches held in the US. Krysinsky also served as the Head Men’s Soccer Coach at his alma mater, Point Park University, where he led the Pioneers to the first-ever winning seasons and playoff berths (1996-98); head coach of North Catholic boys (2007-08), associate head coach of Shady Side Academy boys (2009-2014).
