The WPIAL was well-represented with four schools, Mars (3A), Quaker Valley (2A), Springdale and Seton LaSalle (1A), remaining in three classifications, as the PIAA Girls Soccer playoffs reached the Semifinal Round.
When the smoke cleared, just Springdale emerged as the only team from the WPIAL to advance to the State Final in Class 1A, while Mars and Quaker Valley lost.
PIAA Tournament History – All Classes – (1973 – present)
Below are capsules previewing each of the three matches featuring WPIAL schools. While two of the teams are WPIAL champions, the other two squads, Mars and Seton LaSalle didn’t even reach the WPIAL Finals at Highmark Stadium, needing to win Play-In games to the State tournament. Yet, here they are still pushing for a chance to play for a State title.

Semifinal Round Match Capsules
Tuesday, November 12
Class 3A
6 pm — Mars (20-3) vs Lower Dauphin (23-2) at Mansion Park Stadium, Altoona
The third time was the charm for Mars as they defeated South Fayette in what amounted to be a rubber match as the two school faced each other for the third time in two years in the postseason, but this time, the Fighting Planets scored an early first half goal in the run of play which held up to beat the two-time WPIAL champions.
It came on a set piece — as Meredith Ashbaugh headed in Maeve O’Leary’s corner kick in the match’s third minute.
That goal was enough.
The Fighting Planets, as they always have been under Head Coach Blair Gerlach, are extremely difficult to break down. This season, Mars have conceded seven goals in the run of play, three of those to Fox Chapel, two in the first round WPIAL tournament win vs Oakland Catholic.
In the first round of the PIAA tournament, Mars saw five different players find the back of the net. Sadie Stewart opened up scoring after just eight minutes, with Meredith Ashbaugh and Julia Lishia adding first-half goals. In the second half, Alivia Halliday and Alexa Werner earned goals.
The names may change, but the talent and toughness remains for Mars, a program which has won numerous WPIAL and PIAA titles under Gerlach. The two All-Section standouts leading the way for the Planets are defender Julia Lishia and midfielder Brynn Ramsey.
Now, Mars faces a challenge of beating a Lower Dauphin team that knocked out WPIAL Runner-Up and the team that beat them twice this season, Fox Chapel.
Lower Dauphin earned their PIAA appearance with a 3-0 win the in District 3 finals, then had a rare forfeit victory in the PIAA first round, which helped keep them well-rested for their match with Fox Chapel.
It was Ashley Economopoulos who sparked the Lower Dauphin attack, earning a penalty kick in the box, which teammate Hannah Sansom converted, then broke a 1-1 deadlock early in the second half when she found space to bury a left footed strike from a difficult angle.
Class 2A
5 pm — Quaker Valley (19-2-2) vs Cathedral Prep (19-2-1) at Franklin
It’s been a remarkable season for the Quakers, who came away with an impressive 3-0 victory against Trinity in the Quarterfinal Round. Mia Modrovich had a brace along with an assist, while Hope Waller scored the other goal and Mia Duckstein added an assist. Goalkeeper Ava Hajok had the clean sheet for Quaker Valley.
The Quakers will now face Cathedral Prep squad that is looking for a clean sweep of WPIAL schools in the PIAA tournament. In the first round, Jordyn DiRaimo scored for the Ramblers and goalkeeper Jordan Senz made a last-minute save against Burrell, then on Saturday,
Prep’s girls won their PIAA 2A quarterfinal with Saturday’s 2-1 victory vs North Catholic, as Gannon University recruit Olivia Dixon recorded the match’s decisive goal in the 76th minute.
The Quakers capped the District campaign by winning its first title in 32 years in the WPIAL Finals at Highmark Stadium, beating Burrell, 2-1, with one of the heroes being a freshman, Lily Baker, who scored the game-winning goal. Annabel Miko scored the first goal of the match, early in the second half. Senior, and captain, Mia Modrovich recorded the assist.
Quaker Valley also have another freshman playing a key role, as Ava Hajok has come up big in goal, making six saves in the WPIAL final, then earning a clean sheet in the opening round of the PIAA playoffs.
The Quakers’ leading scorers, during the regular season were Miko (26 goals) and Ari Bosh (14) have combined for 40 goals during the regular season. Again, they came through in the first round of the PIAA playoffs, thanks to a strong second-half performance that lifted the Quakers to a 2-0 victory against Fort LeBouef.
Maddie Gatehouse scored the opening goal and Miko added the second tally. Mia Duckstein and Mia Modrovich earned the assists.
Class 1A
7 pm — Springdale (19-1) vs Seton LaSalle (17-3-2) at North Allegheny
It’s an all-WPIAL match-up in the semifinal as Springdale will take on Seton LaSalle as both teams advanced with wins in Saturday’s quarterfinal matches.
Despite both being in the WPIAL, this will be the first match between the schools this season as Seton LaSalle are in Section 3 and Springdale reside in Section 4.
In a classification which hasn’t seen a shortage of scoring, things are starting to tighten up a little bit more as the tournament goes on.
The WPIAL Champs defeated Bishop Guilfoyle, 2-1, as Hailey Marchlewski’s brace lifted the Dynamos while Seton LaSalle impressed with a 2-0 win vs Karns City.
Led by the Husband-Wife coaching duo, Mark Bentley and Makenna Krebs, Springdale Dynamos have not had any shortage of goals in the postseason — scoring five times in the WPIAL final, beating Winchester Thurston, 5-3 to earn the school’s first Girls WPIAL title . Then the opening round of the PIAA playoffs, in beating Conemaugh Township in a match that ended 2-2 (winning in a penalty kick shootout), Springdale’s two primary attacking threats, Bri Ross and Molly Hurley scored in regulation, while also converting their penalties. Lacey Shondeck also scored on her penalty attempt. Goalkeeper Baileigh Haas made two saves in that shootout.
The Dynamos will be facing a Seton LaSalle squad that has only allowed two goals through its postseason run in the WPIAL and now PIAA’s.
This season has been nothing short of amazing. The Lady Rebels have made it to the final four out of 124 schools in Single A. Months of hard work, sacrifice, and determination have led them to this moment.

At the start of the PIAA tournament, Seton LaSalle experienced an exhilarating 2-1 overtime win at McConnellsburg. Sydney Morgan scored the game-winning goal, and provided the assist on the equalizing goal from Angelina McGrath. Never giving up, the Rebels found the equalizer with seven minutes left in regulation.
Seton LaSalle have been in excellent form at the close of the season, now winning 12 of 13 matches in the homestretch including their first round WPIAL playoff, 2-0, over Ellis School, then another convincing win against last year’s WPIAL and PIAA runner-up, Riverview, 4-0 before a narrow 1-0 loss to Winchester Thurston in the WPIAL semifinal. They responded since the loss with a 2-0 PIAA Play-In win against Sewickley Academy, then earning the exciting result in the PIAA’s first round.
