Pitt Men’s Soccer supplants Stanford for No. 1 spot

There’s a new No. 1 team in the country, with Pitt Men’s Soccer landing atop the United Soccer Coaches Poll released on Tuesday, September 24.

The Panthers went 2-0 last week, outscoring their opponents 6-0—three of those goals coming off the foot of senior striker Luis Sahmkow—and improving their record to 7-1 on the season (3-0 in ACC play).

Pitt throttled Cleveland State of the Horizon League 4-0 in a midweek road matchup before taking down conference foe Boston College 2-0 at Ambrose Urbanic Field.

Pitt entered last week at No. 2, trailing ACC new blood Stanford for the top spot in the Poll.

The Cardinal slipped past UC Davis 1-0 before a 2-2 draw at home against Duke, giving the Panthers enough slack to slip past them.

This marks Pitt’s first appearance at No. 1 since the 2020 season, when they spent several weeks atop the poll along the way to a run at the College Cup.

Pitt Men’s Soccer also clocks in at No. 3 in Top Drawer Soccer’s poll, behind Denver and Stanford, respectively.  They’ll play just one game this week, taking on Virginia Tech in Blacksburg at 7 PM Friday.
