World Cup Fever is here — and yet — the usual business of soccer here in Pittsburgh and the U.S. goes on.
That means as the fans flocked to FNB Stadium on Friday night, the Pittsburgh Riverhounds were literally in route to New England for an important Saturday night clash against Hartford Athletic. I
t’s a matchup dripping with recent history, tactical intrigue, and postseason storylines as both teams try to solidify their standing in a razor-thin Eastern Conference.
Pittsburgh Soccer Now contributor Kevin Hutchinson was on the ground at the Hounds’ training session on Thursday to gather the latest updates from the squad before they head to Connecticut. The squad remains in the same position it was before last weekend’s 1-0 win vs Indy Eleven, with three key players (Sam Bassett, Bradley Sample and Beto Ydrach) remaining out due to injury and one more questionable (Gui Vacter), while the roster depth continues to show for Rob Vincent’s squad that they’ve been more than up to the task.
Now comes a stern road test where not only can they be tested by sheer talent and pressure from a motivated and improved side playing at home, but also in a match where the cannot let their emotions get the best of them. The last two times the Hounds have faced Hartford, they’ve survived very intense, emotional and physical contests.
We will probably see more of the same as both sides are hoping to get an upper hand in getting positioning at the top of the USL Championship’s Eastern Conference table.
Hartford poised for gradual rise under Brendan Burke
This match marks the first time the Hounds will square off against Hartford since last season’s dramatic Eastern Conference Quarterfinal, where the sides battled to a grueling $0-0$ draw before Pittsburgh advanced on penalties en route to their first USL Championship title.
A low-scoring, physical affair would surprise absolutely no one this time around. Hartford enters the weekend boasting the second-best defensive record in the league, having conceded just 10 goals in 11 matches. They are anchored by goalkeeper Antony Siaha, who currently leads the USL Championship with six clean sheets.
However, the Connecticut side is anything but passive. Hartford is coming off arguably the biggest shockwave result of the USL season last Saturday, when they went down to St. Petersburg and handed the previously undefeated Tampa Bay Rowdies their first loss of the year in a gritty 1-0 victory.
Hounds Head Coach Rob Vincent spoke with Pittsburgh Soccer Now‘s Kevin Hutchinson on Thursday about the distinct challenge of preparing for a side coached by the tactically sharp Brenden Burke:
“Brenden always has his teams incredibly well-organized, and you saw that with how they went into Tampa and completely shut down a top-tier attack last week,” Vincent said.
“They are disciplined, they don’t give you much space in the final third, and with Siaha playing the way he is in goal, we know we have to be incredibly sharp and clinical with the chances we do create. It’s going to require a lot of patience from our group to break them down on their own patch.”

🛡️ Locking It Down: Hounds’ Backline Finding Elite Form
While Hartford’s defensive metrics are impressive, the Hounds are currently settling into an elite defensive groove of their own. Pittsburgh has racked up three consecutive clean sheets in league play, and four shutouts over their past five matches across all competitions.
The backline’s stellar work was validated early this week when both rookie Lasse Kelp (the hero of last week’s 92nd-minute stoppage-time winner against Indy) and wing-back Perrin Barnes earned USL Championship Team of the Week honors.
Flanked by Kelp and Barnes, the central pairing of Owen Mikoy and Victor Souza completely suffocated Indy Eleven’s attack, limiting them to a mere two shots on target. Over their past four matches in all competitions, the Hounds’ defensive shell has allowed a total of just nine shots on goal.
Barnes caught up with Hutchinson after training to discuss the defensive chemistry and the mindset required to pick up points in a hostile road environment:
Perrin Barnes on the backline’s chemistry and heading on the road:
“We’re really starting to develop a strong understanding back there. Having guys like Victor and Owen commanding the center makes it easier for Lasse and me to get forward when the spaces open up, knowing we’re covered. Getting the Team of the Week nods is a great reflection of the collective work, but the focus right now is entirely on Hartford. Going into their stadium is never easy, especially after the win they just had, so we have to stay locked in for a full 90 minutes and maintain that defensive standard.”
🔍 Storylines to Watch: History, Healing, and Augi’s Return
Beyond the immediate tactical battle, this fixture carries heavy narrative weight for several reasons.
1. The Augi Williams Reunion
For the first time, the Hounds will line up against forward Augi Williams, who spearheaded Pittsburgh’s frontline during last season’s historic championship run and has been one of the USL Championship’s most constistent forwards and goal scorers in the past decade.
It’s an interesting storyline because despite the Hounds winning the title last season, even with the club holding a team option in his contract, they chose not to re-sign Williams after a season where he did the dirty work with playing big time minutes, but may have been looked at as an underachieving goal scorer, finishing with 10 goals.
Clearly the Hounds had their hearts set on bringing back Albert Dikwa — so in that case — Williams was expendable.
A consummate pro, Williams signed with Hartford in the offseason and currently leads their attack with three goals across all competitions.
Based on his current 2026 campaign vs last year’s 2025 championship run with the Hounds, Williams has been less productive in terms of overall output but maintains a similar underlying attacking threat per 90 minutes. In 2025, Williams averaged a goal roughly every 311 minutes. In 2026, that number has widened, as he is averaging a goal every 421 minutes. His xG per 90 has taken a minor hit from last season, dipping to 0.28. This indicates that Hartford is creating slightly lower-quality scoring chances for him than the Riverhounds’ system did.
However, all that being said, with Burke’s emphasis on turning Hartford into a more tactically disciplined side and they’ve become better defensively, Williams’ two-way play may be a good fit here.
While Hartford has occasionally struggled to find the back of the net in league play (just 10 goals for), they’ve found life recently, striking six times in their last two USL Cup matches.
Still, neutralizing the former Hound will be job number one for center backs Mikoy and Souza.
2. Moving Past Last Year’s Flashpoint
This trip marks Pittsburgh’s first return to Hartford since a deeply tense incident last season, when Hartford’s Marlan Harston accused Hounds Captain Danny Griffin of using a racial slur during a match.
Following a comprehensive and thorough independent investigation, the USL completely cleared Griffin of any wrongdoing. Expect Griffin, the consummate professional and engine of the Hounds’ midfield, to focus entirely on controlling the tempo of the match from the opening whistle.
🔢 By The Numbers
