Match Summary

The physical toll and attrition of the ACC gauntlet finally caught up to No. 7 Pitt men’s soccer on Friday night.

Playing with a makeshift lineup that was once again missing dynamic midfielder Caden Grabfelder alongside unavailable captain Logan Oliver and local standout Anders Bordoy, the Panthers saw their six-match unbeaten run come to a halt on Friday night at Ambrose Urbanic Field, falling 1-0 to a relentless North Carolina side.

How It Happened

North Carolina (7-2-3, 3-1-2 ACC) rolled into Pittsburgh and immediately put the hosts under heavy pressure, outpossessing and outmuscling the Panthers throughout a cagey first half that saw a 9-3 foul advantage heavily favor the visitors.

Pitt defense was stretched and tested right out of the gate.

In the 9th minute, UNC’s Joschi Schelb played Bertil Rygaard Hansen in behind the Pitt backline, but his point-blank shot forced Panthers goalkeeper Jack Moxom, who was coming off his line — to extend to make the first half’s only save.

Ten minutes later, the same Tar Heel combination unlocked space again, with Schelb firing just wide from distance.

Outside of an early, off-target effort from freshman target forward Mamadou Tall, Pitt’s depleted attack struggled to generate any sustained rhythm or testing opportunities in the opening 45 minutes, heading into the break deadlocked at 0-0.

The breakthrough for the visitors arrived shortly after the interval. In the 51st minute, North Carolina moved quickly through the final third as Rygaard Hansen squared a sharp pass across the box. Max Fisher ran into the open space and lashed a low, hard strike past Moxom to put the Tar Heels in front 1-0—Fisher’s first goal of the season.

UNC continued to pile on pressure looking for insurance, forcing Moxom into a sharp save off Evans Dapaah in the 50th minute, while Joschi Schelb continually probed the Pitt defense with dangerous runs.

In the dying moments before the clock reached zero, the Panthers summoned a desperate, frantic push.

Chasing an equalizer, Pitt ignited a late-match flurry in the final minute of regulation. The surge included a dangerous, close-range free kick and a flurry of three consecutive corner kicks in the span of seconds. However, UNC goalkeeper Alan Rutkowski and the Tar Heel defense scrambled clear, preserving the clean sheet and snapping Pitt’s nine-match scoring streak.

Despite holding a 7-5 edge in corner kicks, the Panthers were outshot 13-3 on the night, putting only one attempt—a second-half look from Grayson Carter—on target.

Up Next

With the result, Pitt drops to 8-3-2 overall and 3-2-1 in conference play. The Panthers will have little time to lick their wounds, returning to Ambrose Urbanic Field on Monday, Oct. 19, to host powerhouse No. 3 Georgetown in a massive non-conference tilt at 7:00 p.m. ET.

Discipline:

  • Pitt: Cristian LoGrasso (YC 41′), Alex Hauskrecht (YC 54′)
